Volunteering with CEIS

CEIS enables local Christians to volunteer and teach children about Jesus.

Your presence can make a huge difference, today.

Wondering with young explorers

SU Australia supports and assists local Christians in volunteering in teams in schools to provide Christian Religious Education by preparing curriculum and resources, providing regular training, coordinating with schools, and supporting volunteers.

Parents of local school children are asking that their children find out more about Christian faith and values. This really could be the most valuable way that you serve in your community.

Volunteer roles can take a few forms, but they generally involve attending one or more CEIS sessions (40-60 minutes) in a school each term and facilitating small group discussions with the provided content. To find out more about non-teaching volunteer roles, contact the office or sign up to the relevant mailing list.

As a volunteer team member teaching CEIS in a school, you will need to:

  • Be a Christian and part of a local church gathering
  • Hold a valid Working with Children Check
  • Complete Scripture Union’s Childsafe training
  • Complete a Scripture Union Australia volunteer application (including interview and reference checks)
  • Attend an online New Team Members Orientation session via Zoom
  • Complete Behaviour Management and Teaching and Learning modules (online or in person)
  • Attend or view curriculum training sessions (each term that you’re volunteering)

Volunteer FAQs

Yes! New volunteers are encouraged to observe a session and come to a term-specific training session. You can arrange a time with the CEIS coordinator.

Once you are onboarded, you can choose the specific sessions (days/times) you would like to volunteer for on a term-by-term basis. There over 100 sessions each term.

We do love to see people commit to a school and develop relationships by attending the same school(s) each term.

Each session requires a minimum of two volunteers – a team leader and a small group facilitator. We try to have at least one volunteer per 6 students to ensure quality and engaging small group times.

  1. Resource Preparation
Each term, CEIS provides resource kits to the team leaders. There’s a fair bit of crafting, laminating, and packaging that goes into it, and we are always looking for assistance with this – either in the office, or even with people working on things at home.

  2. Adminstration
Coordinating 100+sessions with 80+ volunteers every term takes a lot of administrative overhead. If writing standardised emails, calling school admin offices, or confirming details have been entered correctly is your thing, we could use your help!

  3.  Comms and Graphic Design. One of our key goals is to grow awareness about the opportunity for Christian Religious Education in Canberra. If you have skills in writing copy for communication, proof reading, or graphic design, we’d love your support!

  4. CEIS Sub-committee

The CEIS sub-committee is made up of a team of volunteers who oversee the finances, fundraising, and  communication between churches and SU Australia.  and direction of They use their various skills and gifts (including administration, communications, event planning, secretarial, finance management, fundraising skills, prayer, and networking) to shape and facilitate SU’s ministry in ACT schools. If your church is a partner with CEIS, they could nominate a representative to the sub-committee. Find out more here.
